What they say:
June Jenson, an accomplished Oxford professor, has spent her life trying to get out from under the shadow of her infamous grandfather: a renowned archaeologist accused of stealing a relic during an excavation at Sutton-Hoo. When a secret alliance recruits June to guard priceless artifacts she realizes that this is her chance to contribute to the history she loves and rid herself of the cloud of suspicion that her family has lived under for so long. But, when the artifact June is commissioned to guard turns out to be the same relic her grandfather was accused of stealing- a relic he has consistently claimed never existed - her carefully laid plans of family redemption are a bit shot.
Now, with the aid of her accused grandfather who suffers from early onset Alzheimer’s, and a chauffeur who’s looking for a scandal to make him famous, June must race to discover the truth of the shield and what really happened at Sutton-Hoo all those years ago.
What we say – review by Charlotte Foreman:
If you’re a fan of Emily Harper then you’ll know she writes a wicked romcom. This time, however, she’s brought readers something a little different, something more action/adventure, and my god does she do it well!
I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect when I cracked this book open. I knew Emily had strayed from her usual path but, seeing as Emily is one of my all-time favourite authors, I was excited and intrigued by the change. What I got was a gripping yet very witty story that I could not put down.
June is an ace character. Dragged down her whole adult life by accusations and rumours surrounding her grandfather, the professor, she also finds herself bound to him, thanks to his deteriorating state of mind. But she takes all this on the chin and does what she can to keep them both stable and out of the limelight. Overall, I found June highly intelligent, determined, funny and incredibly likeable as a character.
I’m not exaggerating when I say the professor is hilarious. His one-liners and scathing comments aimed at his former colleague had me chuckling throughout the book and I adored him. The rest of the cast join in with the cracking dialog and you just can’t help but let them sweep you up in the drama. Packed with action without being over done, the main focus of the book, the Shield of Quell, is unique and interesting enough to keep non-archaeology buffs enthralled.
I literally haven’t got a bad word to say about Emily Harper’s latest release and I could really talk about it all day so thank goodness there is more to come!
